Dragons Eye Scott Drinkwater as Top Fullback Target After Missing Trai Fuller

The St George Illawarra Dragons are actively searching for a new fullback after missing out on Trai Fuller, and two major options are now on their radar.

The Dragons have struggled in the opening weeks of the 2026 NRL season, with Clint Gutherson failing to deliver consistent performances. With Gutherson set to miss several weeks due to injury, coach Shane Flanagan may rely on Tyrell Sloan to take over the number one jersey. If Sloan performs well, Gutherson could find it difficult to return to the starting lineup despite being a club co-captain.

The club was previously interested in Trai Fuller, but the deal collapsed after the Dolphins fullback requested an additional year in his contract — a condition the Dragons were unwilling to accept due to other transfer plans.

Now, the Dragons are focusing on two key targets.

One option is Jahream Bula, who has an unactivated contract option for next season and remains a long-term prospect. However, competition from the Tigers and other clubs could make the deal difficult.

The bigger priority appears to be Scott Drinkwater. Reports suggest the North Queensland Cowboys fullback could be allowed to leave at the end of the 2026 season if a deal is reached with the Dragons. Although Drinkwater is contracted until 2027, the Cowboys are reportedly open to negotiations if he chooses to move.

Drinkwater has been one of the Cowboys’ most dangerous attacking players and a consistent performer in recent seasons. Signing him would require significant salary adjustments, but the Dragons are understood to be in early talks about a potential transfer.

Another key factor in the decision is the future of coach Shane Flanagan, whose position at the club remains uncertain. This could influence Drinkwater’s final decision.

At the moment, Drinkwater does not have strong interest from other clubs, which could give the Dragons a clear opportunity to secure their top fullback target.

The Dragons now face a crucial decision: build their future around Scott Drinkwater or compete for Jahream Bula in a competitive market.
